Telecoms tech company Filtronic has announced a £4.5m contract with what it has described as a new UK defence customers.
The firm, with its bases in County Durham and Leeds, told shareholders the latest piece of work will begin in January and will see it provide its radio frequency modules. Filtronic said that after a product qualification phase it expects to start delivery of the units over a 12 month period from the final quarter of 2024.
Richard Gibbs, chief executive officer, said: "We have been working closely with the new customer over several years and this contract win represents a successful collaboration between the MoD, the customer, Filtronic and PRFI, a leading UK-based technical design consultancy providing monolithic microwave integrated circuits services. It is yet another example of Filtronic's ability to support the UK defence industry with a sovereign supply chain for advanced semiconductor packaging solutions that are optimised for both thermal and radio frequency (RF) performance."

The contract is the latest in a string of new work for Filtronic, including a deal to provide a global low earth orbit satellite company with components which was announced in April. That project will see Filtronic provide technology that forms part of a system to connect orbiting satellites.
And before that, the firm revealed details of funding it had secured from the Government's £16m Defence Technology Exploitation Programme to deliver components for use in radar systems. Filtronic is working with an unnamed, major aerospace name to produce and test specialist transmit receive modules (TRMs) for airbourne radar systems.
The AIM-listed firm's stock price has been climbing over the past year. That comes despite the release of figures in August which showed it had seen a fall in revenue and profits in the year to the end of May.
Bosses said headwinds had come from global shortages of semiconductors and economic turmoil. Chairman Jonathan Neale also said challenges such as predicting the timing of defence contracts and delays in the roll-out of 5G telecoms infrastructure were features of the market that Filtronic needed to meet.
Filtronic is a designer and manufacturer of products used in the defence, aerospace, telecoms and space markets.
