The University of Sunderland is committed to supporting businesses in the North East, offering an employer-centred approach to training, education and workforce development.

It collaborates with a wide variety of partners to support delivery of highly specialised training. From higher and degree apprenticeships to continuing professional development (CPD) courses and ESF fully-funded courses , it has a portfolio that can meet your business requirements.

The University of Sunderland is the lead partner in the North East Workforce Skills consortium, a European Social Fund project, which aims to upskill the workforce within Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.

More than 100 fully-funded short courses available

The fantastic ESF fully-funded courses courses provide the opportunity for individuals who work in a variety of sectors such as healthcare, digital and technology, engineering, business and leadership, media and education, to achieve personal goals and aspirations.

The university has even jumped on to the trending word of 2022: menopause, with Sharon MacArthur aka ‘Miss Menopause', taking North East organisations by storm with her taboo-busting ‘menopause in the workplace’ masterclasses, which aim to educate and inspire people to get talking about menopause. These interactive sessions have been a real hit and have led the way for positive change within organisations.

Companies are increasingly recognising the importance of upskilling their workforce with many already reaping the benefits. By investing in their staff, businesses can initiate growth from within which leans into the increasing need for resourceful planning in times of change. Such investment is what allows new leaders to develop and grow.

Launched in September 2021, the North East Workforce Skills Programme is an ESF funded project worth nearly £15m and is aimed at levelling up workforce skills to support more than 17,500 employees across the Tyne and Wear and Northumberland area by September 2023.

The programme supports employers to access the tools they need to upskill their workforce. Led by the University of Sunderland the consortium of Further and Higher Education providers in the North East includes Access Training, MTC Training, Newcastle College, SETA, Code and TDR Training.

The programme promotes:

  • education
  • skills and lifelong learning, offering employers higher level continuing professional development (CPD)
  • training solutions, to support them to sustain and grow their businesses

Consortium partners have put together an offer for employers that includes a variety of CPD and training solutions to support employers to sustain and grow their business.

To date 235 employers have accessed fully funded training, which has benefitted more than 1,840 individuals. Employers have included Believe Housing, Biddick Academy, Draegar Safety Uk Ltd, Fulwell Medical Practice, Marelli Automotive Systems Ltd, Seaward Electronics and Nexus to name but a few.
