Later this month the Wales Fast Growth 50 will be celebrating its 25th anniversary at the Utilita Arena in Cardiff. With a thousand people attending this special event, it promises to be one of the biggest celebrations of Welsh entrepreneurship and innovation for many years.

As one does on these occasions, I have had the opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved since the search for the very first Fast Growth 50 list was launched back in 1998 with the support of the Western Mail.

At its core, the Wales Fast Growth 50 list is a celebration of entrepreneurial success and innovation. By recognising the fastest-growing private companies in Wales, it shines a spotlight on those businesses that have achieved significant sales growth over a three-year period.

This recognition goes beyond mere numbers as it tells stories of how businesses from all parts of Wales and from all sectors have succeeded, serving as a source of inspiration for other entrepreneurs and scale-up businesses.

For the 720 firms that have appeared on the lists for the last quarter of the century, the Fast Growth 50 has provided them with a platform for increased visibility and credibility.

According to many of the entrepreneurs who I have spoken to about their inclusion on the lists, this enhanced recognition often leads to new opportunities, including access to a wider customer base, potential investors, and strategic partnerships. For a number of companies, making it onto the list is a turning point and has opened doors that were previously out of reach. In addition, the Fast Growth 50 also fosters a sense of community among entrepreneurs with many connecting with other like-minded individuals who can offer support, advice, and collaboration opportunities to help drive further growth

For those looking to develop their own businesses, the Fast Growth 50 list serves as a benchmark for growth and innovation in the private sector and by analysing the strategies and practices of the fastest-growing companies, entrepreneurs can gain valuable insights into what drives success in today’s competitive market. The diverse range of industries represented in the list also highlights emerging trends and sectors that are experiencing innovation and growth.

For those businesses striving to make the Fast Growth 50 list, it represents a goal that motivates continuous improvement and growth and this drive for excellence not only benefits the individual companies but also contributes to the overall health and dynamism of the economy. However, what we have also seen over the last twenty five years is not growth on its own but, during difficult economic times, many examples of resilience and adaptability when the odds have been against success.

Fast Growth 50 businesses often have stories of overcoming challenges, pivoting strategies, and adapting to changing market conditions. This resilience is especially inspiring in times of economic uncertainty such as during the Covid pandemic, reminding other businesses that growth and success are possible even in the face of adversity.

For the Welsh economy, Fast Growth 50 firms continue to play a significant role in driving economic growth, having created tens of thousands of new jobs, stimulated innovation, and contributed to the economic development of their communities and Wales as a whole. By highlighting these companies, the Fast Growth 50 continues to emphasise the importance of supporting and nurturing the private sector in Wales as a key driver of economic progress.

Therefore, the Wales Fast Growth 50 is more than just a list of successful companies; it is a testament to the power of entrepreneurial spirit and a catalyst for business growth and innovation. By recognising the achievements of these fast-growing companies every year, we are not only highlighting individual business success but providing valuable insights and inspiration for the broader business community.

As the awards that Welsh businesses want to win more than any other, the Fast Growth 50 list is an invaluable resource for businesses and entrepreneurs, offering visibility, inspiration and encouraging businesses to strive for excellence.

And when we are celebrating yet another group of fifty amazing businesses in three weeks’ time in Cardiff, we will also be recognising the hard work, resilience, and ingenuity that characterises the best of Welsh entrepreneurship and reminding ourselves, yet again, of the potential that exists within this nation to drive forward economic progress and innovation.
